Lolita Fashion is a type of Japanese Street Style with the influence of the Victorian era and Rococo period. It is best known for its Gothic style and several unique sub-styles. Its popularity started in the 1970’s when famous labels like Milk and Pink House, the first Lolita production lines, took place in the fashion industry. Before long, other labels like Baby, The Stars Shine Bright and Metamorphose temps de fille came. At the moment, Lolita Fashion is globally known that their labels can be found in several boutiques and stores and worn by many.
The Term
Though in the American Heritage dictionary, the term Lolita means ‘a seductive adolescent girl’, the infamous fashion brand “Lolita” does not connote sex. The fashion line uses the name for their brand however they created a new meaning to it. The style itself represents difference on the real meaning of the term and clarifies no relation to the ground-breaking novel entitled Lolita of renowned Russian author Vladimir Nabokov. The novel signifies an obsession of an older man to an adult-child temptress. On the other hand, the brand name Lolita does not live up to this protocol.
Lolita dresses were not created to attract and drool men over or to give pedophiles the chance to attack and lure young-adults. Instead, their creations aim to give ladies the feeling of being secure, young, pretty and graceful. In addition, the brand name has its own purpose and objectives. It prefers ladies to be beautiful and cute rather than to be sexy. It fights the exposure of skin and body and presents modesty in fashion. Also, it allows ladies to know more their preferences and sexuality.
Logically, the term has been utilized because everyone refers to it as ‘young girls’ and it suits their target market who are mostly girls who wanted to adorn themselves like Victorian children and porcelain dolls.
The Influence
The Lolita dresses had been influenced and popularized by visual kei (visual art) bands. It features rock music performers in elaborate and flamboyant costumes. The former leader and guitarist of Malice Mizer band named Mana had been attributed for popularizing the fashion especially Gothic Lolita.
In 1999, Mana founded his own fashion label Moi-meme-Moitie and named his designs as ‘Elegant Gothic Lolita’ and ‘Elegant Gothic Aristocrat’. In addition, his fashion line has successfully established itself and considered one of the most popular Lolita franchise. Moreover, other bands and personalities had been helpful on the success of the label. For instance, the band Razorbladekisses from United Kingdom had made an impact on Lolita clothes while Japanese franchise Pokemon had been influenced by the brand in terms of its actual characters.
On the other hand, the influence of Lolita in the fashion industry is also undeniable. It made an immediate impact on countries like China, Korea, Taiwan and even the United States. It had penetrated the industry like other fashion lines and became successful. The styles and designs affect the fashion sense of celebrities, musicians and ordinary people.
The Popularity
Japanese Lolita fashion has its own share of popularity in the world of fashion. It is globally known and had knocked international markets. Outside Japan, Lolita Fashion invaded places like North America, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Russia, Belgium and all throughout the world.
In addition, major franchise and different retail stores had been established in several countries to support and serve international clients. The Star Shine Bright, Baby and Angelic Pretty stores can be seen in Paris and San Francisco. Lolita Clothes can also be seen on several cosplay, concerts and anime conventions on different places. Furthermore, characters wore costumes that are inspired by Lolita Fashion on different Manga series like Rozen Maiden and The Embalmer. Also, character designs on Animes like Gosick and Paradise Kiss had been influenced by the fashion.
In overall, the different styles are being followed by many lolitas because it promotes a principle of living beautifully than just wearing it. The fashion line signifies cuteness, elegance and feminity that most ladies desire. Similarly, the Victorian and French Rococo-inspired designs added more attraction to ladies.
In the long run, Lolita fashion label had been successful and has continued to provide creative and vibrant designs despite of tough competitions in fashion world.
